Toronto rockers In My Coma have surfaced with a poised sophomore release.
The group continue to pay homage to their 80s/90s influences with Next Life, the follow up to 2011’s Magnets & Miracles. Teaming up with Producer Mark Makoway, co-founder of the Juno Award-winning band Moist, the new release delivers a polished pop/rock sound.
The lead single “Take a Ride” has all of the makings of a classic Brit-Pop tune; memorable chorus and catchy riffs. On the group’s Facebook page vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Jasper James explains the background behind the tune in more detail. “It’s a song that is really full of conflicting messages and imagery. The initial inspiration came from the mythology of the Sirens, who were both beautiful and deadly, and who lured sailors causing ships to be wrecked on the rocks. I love that dichotomy of beauty and death together.”
The upbeat tempo carries through to the band’s second single “Beautiful Mind,” but there are a few tracks that don’t vibe with us such as “We Are One” and “Wreckage.” They simply don’t have the same stride as “Tell Me Love”, “Desperate Man”, “Clam” and “Throw It All Away.”
Their debut album Magnets & Miracles, highlighted their muses in songs like “Believe Me,” an uncanny Depeche Mode tune and “Hit Them Down Kid” which is reminiscent to the opening of Bush’s “Machine Head”. Whereas, Next Life is more subtle in highlighting these influences. The album balances their dark lyrics with upbeat melodies, leaving the heavier synth parts at the door.
